Easy Oil Painting Paint and Sip Ideas for Kids & Adults 🎨

Whether you want to have a creative picnic with your kids in the park, a corporate mindfulness paint and sip retreat, or plan for an art lesson, here are a few ideas to spark your inner artist. In this article I'll go over a few good options specifically for oil painting supplies. Please keep in mind that this article contains affiliate links to Amazon, so you'll be supporting my business with a small commission when you click on them and place an order. You can alternatively find many of these supplies or something very similar at your local art supply store too.

Let's say you would like to try oil painting outdoors, perhaps you'd like me to host a lesson for you, or you just want some creative solitude. For this you'll want supplies that don't require too much maintenance. In general, it's good to have lower maintenance art supplies for most paint and sip events, etc. Even if you are doing art professionally creating as much ease as possible in your routine will free up that energy for your creativity.

With this in mind, I highly recommend water mixable oils. These are considered oil paint, used by some professional artists, yet you can clean up your brushes with soap and water after instead of paint thinner. It's more fun to paint when you have a range of colors to choose from, so consider getting Winsor and Newton's Tube set of 20 to get started with.

If you prefer having more colors to experiment with, you can get this Mont Marte set of 36 Water Mixable Oil Paints instead.

Now that you have your paint, you'll want a palette to mix it on. When it comes to oil painting, especially when you're on the go, I recommend a disposable palette like this Strathmore one, or if you already have wax paper in your kitchen, you can use that too!

When it comes to events or going outside with your paint for a lesson, it probably won't be necessary to get water mixable oil mediums, but if you decide to delve into painting more frequently, you may want to check them out since they do offer a wider range of techniques and versatility for your painting. You can scroll through Winsor and Newton's Water Mixable Oil Mediums here for a variety of options.

One of the most personal choices you make as a painter might be your paint brush. Every artist has their favorites. However, for a Paint and Sip or outdoor painting with kids, you may want to consider a more economical paint brush that you can decide to keep, but won't feel bad if you forget to clean it and have to toss it after. A set like this one includes extras like a palette knife and sponge.

If you do decide you want a higher quality artist brush, ones to consider are Silver Brush Limited sets as well as Velvet Touch sets. Both are great for details and you'll definitely feel the difference when you go on to paint your masterpiece with them!

But what is paint, brushes, and a palette without something to paint on? For the final essential of any painting event, you'll of course need a surface. When it comes to oil painting, it's probably best to stick to traditional canvas or thick paper options.

One of the most economical options is canvas boards like these, choose depending on your preferred size. Keep in mind, if you or your child paint something you love, you can always frame it for that extra touch!

Another option is stretched canvas, and there is of course a wide range of quality out there. For an art lesson and for some size options to explore consider a variety pack like these.

For the outdoors, the options above might be best, especially with a little wind, they'll be sturdy. But if you would prefer paper, consider this Strathmore Oil Painting Pad. Again, you can always put it in a frame if you paint something you want to display.

Those are the basics, but you may also want a small easel such as this table top one or this basic stand alone one.

If you decide you want a more professional easel for at-home use, here is a nice option to consider.

In addition, you may also want a table covering, paper towels, and of course cups with water. Remember, water mixable oil paints can be mixed with a little water, and more importantly the brushes can be cleaned with just soap, such as dish soap, and water.
